Certified Anoto Platform Provider

Our Story

Digital Pen Systems officially formed October 17, 2005 in Boston, MA, but our involvement in Anoto Digital Pen and Paper actually began several years before.

Company President, Jason Soulier, began work with Digital Pen and Paper as a founding member of HP’s Digital Pen and Paper Worldwide Business Team in 2002. HP teamed with Anoto to develop enterprise print on demand Digital Pen and Paper technology. The goal was simple – make every page a unique and identifiable record by printing variable Anoto Certified Pattern on standard HP Laser Jet printers.

As the HP team that would later become Digital Pen Systems, we deployed the first applications of Enterprise Digital Pen and Paper at ALZA Pharmaceutical, Mass General Hospital, United States Army Medical IT, Westfield Insurance, and Con Edison. Diverse customers, each one a new challenge that stretched and improved the Anoto technology.

But new technologies are the pursuit of focused companies and the unique opportunity arose summer 2005 to break as an intact team and form our own private company, Digital Pen Systems.

Since then we have opened a second office in Salt Lake City, started a national sales team, been the lead technology company in a major healthcare federal grant, closed on an equity investment with Promontory Capital, and won Anoto’s Worldwide Golden Pen Award for the Most Outstanding Customer Application.

All of us at Digital Pen Systems are passionate about paper-based business processes going digital without losing the benefits and ease of pen and paper. Please use the link to contact us. We will respond immediately and look forward to reaching out to you as a new friend of Digital Pen Systems.

Our People

Jason Soulier

Jason Soulier is President of Digital Pen Systems. An early pioneer in Digital Pen and Paper technology, Jason was a founding member of HP’s Worldwide Digital Pen and Paper business team. Second to the many fine trout caught – and even finer ones that got away, on their family ranch in Utah, Jason has held a variety of management of technology positions including a major handheld video project for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Jason graduated from the University of Utah in Chemical Engineering.

Mike Moore

Mike Moore is CTO/ Senior Engineer.    Mike was a central member of HP’s initial Digital Pen Technical team and technical lead on a number of firsts in enterprise Digital Pen and Paper.    Some people have way too many interests and talents.    Those people envy Mike Moore for having so many interests and talents.   One might think his encyclopedic knowledge of literature, film, music, hiking, cuisine, philosophy, and hockey might give him a large head – but truth be told it is about average in size.    Mike graduated in Engineering from MIT, where he is also currently enrolled in graduate work.

Chipper

Heston Chipman is VP of Customer Deployments.     Heston managed various professional services groups at HP, including Digital Pen and Paper, before joining Digital Pen Systems.    Heston has been managing software for web based ventures since people still were using the term ‘information superhighway’ with a straight face.   FamilySearch.org, the first site to host a terabyte of searchable text is one of his finest accomplishments.   An accomplished hockey player (must be the Canadian in him) Heston graduated from BYU in Accounting and from Suffolk University with an MBA.

Jon Baddley

Jon Baddley is VP Sales and Marketing for Digital Pen Systems.    Jon recently joined Digital Pen Systems from EnableUs where he launched their international business working out of Paris, France.   When Jon isn’t busy fielding new customer calls, he can be seen leading the sprint at local road bike races for Vanguard Media Racing.   Next time Jon is at your office, be sure and ask to see his ambidextrous Digital Pen demonstration.   Jon graduated from the University of Utah in French.

Jill Harmon

Jill Harmon is Director of Customer Service. Jill became part of the Digital Pen Systems team after several years of creating satisfied customers in the insurance industry. Next time you attend a wedding, don’t be surprised to see Jill photographing – and zipping, the bride. Jill was proud to repair a broken dress zipper for a recent bride mid-procession. Not to think she is too nice, Jill is also a member of local motorcycle club, the Rough Riders (RRMC). Jill graduated from the University of Utah in Telecommunications and Film.

Carl Restivo

Carl Restivo is Director Sales and Marketing, leading our channel development. Carl has worked for various Anoto partner companies and brings a rich history with Digital Pen and Paper. Traveling often for the company, Carl enjoys a good evening walk in a new city with a medium bodied Robusto. Previously, Carl co-founded Tri-City Micrographics and was even a former Official Jeep Trail Guide if you ever want to see what yours can do. Carl graduated from Plattsburg State in NY with a degree in Communications.

Ken Overgard

Ken Overgard is a Senior Engineer/ Sales Engineer. Ken, as an original member of HP’s technical team - and now, continues to be a lead filer of new intellectual property around enterprise Digital Pen and Paper. Ken’s claim to fame are many including walking the largest dogs in Boston, being personally known at Starbucks, programming in over 100 computer languages, and single-handedly coding two full customer projects in one month (we won’t say which customers since they are happily unaware). Ken graduated from MIT with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

Karen Rothermel

Karen Rothermel is our Quality and Test Lead Engineer.    Karen was part of the HP Digital Pen and Paper professional services team, and performed quality testing on HP’s Memory Disk and Instant Share products during her time there.    A natural learner and teacher, Karen has graduate degrees in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from U Mass and Oregon State, and has taught Mathematics at various university settings.   When she isn’t trying to break things, Karen can be found squashing aphids in the rose garden or maybe making jam from fresh garden fruit.

David Lonergan

David Lonergan is a Senior Engineer.   David, an original member of HP’s Digital Pen and Paper professional services team, brings significant new technology company experience with twenty plus years software engineering and three previous startups.   When playing ping pong against David, try to send the ball to his backhand, as his forehand is lethal.   David is also our true Boston native and a joy to hear speak for any fan of the Hub.   David is master of our rather complex Long-Term Nursing Care database service.   David is a graduate of MIT and Harvard University Extension School.

Jordan Squire

Jordan Squire is a Customer Support Engineer.    Jordan is an intern at Digital Pen Systems while he finishes his Computer Engineering degree at the University of Utah.   Before joining our team, Jordan started and ran his own web business selling handmade ‘duct tape’ wallets at All-Star Duct Tape.
